CAROL BRODY, MAY, 2018
When I notice something that intrigues me, I often think about how I could understand what caught my attention. How will an image lend itself to be expressed through color, form, imagery, layering, representational skill and/or any way I could conjure. I have worked in a variety of media, including ceramics, encaustics, watercolor, photography, and digital media. I constantly experiment with different media to find a way of capturing what the essence is for me. This process often dictates the outcome. Different processes, and different approaches often suggest new ways of presenting a concept. During the process, something happens. A direction to follow unfolds. I respond to the space between intention and accident that occurs in art. The process also reveals new possibilities. I can explore the tension between opposites: structure versus spontaneity, hard versus soft, amorphous versus line, depth versus flatness. Whether my art arrives from close-ups of plants, urban architecture, or is imaged through digital drawings, I am able to find new constructs and imagery that reinvents my work.
